Inconsistency in Color
« on: November 01, 2017, 02:11:24 AM »
Same amount of carbonate, karo, gold chloride, time in microwave but not the same color of red in the results.

Last night it was dark red but not purple. Tonight it was light red almost pink.

Probably not a big deal but I would like to know why if anyone can tell me?

One of the tenets of physics and chemistry is that if you do the exact same thing with the exact same materials, you will get exactly the same results.  So I expect there was something different.

Did you make a new batch of electrolyte?
Did you make a new batch of reducing agent?
Did you use a new batch of distilled water?
Did you clean your flask the same way?
etc.

BTW, I would toss out that batch.
There is the unknown and the unknowable.  It's a wise man who knows the difference.

I'm thinking that maybe the carbonate may be settling in it's container and I may need to shake it back up.

I'll try that and report back,

Thanks

The only thing I can think of that might cause your problem is hydrogen peroxide.  Did you clean your flask with it?

Not in gold production, I do use it in silver with a different flask.

The reason I think the carbonate is settling is the bottom of the glass container has a sediment look sometimes that didn't register until now.

Last night I went  through the same routine only stopping to shake the jar of carbonate solution before adding it to the mix and the result was a perfect ruby red gold.
Now if it continues over time I will report back and maybe suggest that to our group.

Thanks,
Mike
