Does excess Knox Gelatin fall out?
« on: February 20, 2017, 12:27:08 AM »
I am looking for some clarification on the use of Knox gelatin.

Does the excess (not bonded to a silver partial) gelatin as an original looking grain remain suspended in the colloidal silver solution or does it fall out over a few months time??

I suspect as probably most do that once dissolved the gelitan stays dissolved and clear.

Maybe you guys who use gelatin premixed with either DW or 20 ppm colloidal silver can chime in also.

 Thanks guys, Bobby

No, it stays in solution/suspended. If you use WAY too much, you'll have "Colloidal Silver jello shots" (wink).

Its just like using more reducing agent than you need.  It doesn't fall out of solution either.

I always use a little more than I need of each for good measure but especially with the gelatine I really mean a "little" because too much will get you jello.

I don't recall exactly how much you have to use to start gelling the solution but I'm remembering something up around 1g/liter is getting there.  Perhaps someone who knows the real amount could chime in.

According to Knox,  2 grams of gelatin will gel 1 cup of water.

Bobby,

I would suggest making another batch without using the filter papers.  I use a reusable K-cup filter for mine, which leaves no paper fibers in the solution.  This would rule out the filters as the source of your white precipitate.

Kephra,

Is your K-cup filter plastic or metal?  Does it matter to the zeta potential if it is metal?

Mine plastic frame with metal mesh. This does not harm the colloid.

Just to clarify on filtering, you pour your Colloidal Silver through a K-cup filter after production? That is sufficient to filter out any precipitate?

No, but it does filter out dog hairs, and big chunks of debris like what might fall off the anode.
