I did find this abstract:
http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/19430892.2011.574926
The abstract hints that AgNps are effective at very low concentrations if enough time is given.

I bought some 100% Lye crystals today at Home Hardware, the container says multi purpose cleaner.  There is no other mention of ingredients.  There are no other lyes or caustic soda available.

So now i am wondering how to mix it! Do i just dissolve it in water and then use a couple drops when making cs?

The instructions for all purpose cleaning state: mix 1 tbsp lye in 1 gallon water.

Thx in advance for any info.

Dissolve a teaspoon full in 8 ounces of water.  Wear gloves and eye protection as lye crystals are very caustic.
Add the solution drop by drop until your current regulator output voltage drops by a couple volts, or until the current reaches the setpoint of the regulator.

Hi, I bought some Sodium Hydroxide from Essential Depot, I made the 1M Solution and I used one drop per 8 0z. batch and it is way too much, it does not seem consumable. I used 4 Grams to 100 Ml. of water to make the 1M Solution. It seems like a 1% solution was the only strength I could swallow at one drop as well. Gave me "Pipe Mouth" the old timer pipe smokers call it. The 1M solution worked very fast at two drops but just not consumable

is there any other efficient safe electrolyte we can use??? Or does this just speed the process anyway and is not necessary? I like just using Cinnamon extract for now, I have a feeling the 1% solution I made is probably pointless to use as it is too weak. What about Orange juice?

Sean,
One drop in 250ml should not even be noticable.  No on the orange juice, you are trying to make silver hydroxide, and for that you need a hydroxide.

I hope it wasn't yellow snow !
Actually, dew, rain, and snow are full of contaminants, usually much worse than tap water.

Hi Kephra,
Here it is my picture of CS using regulator and NaOH. My silver became black after 11 min, but CS looks good.

Thanks...

Correction. After another 1/2 hour CS became orange...

Yeah, the CS looks great, but one thing I do notice is that your silver coin was completely submerged.  This is ok if you use pure silver wire to suspend it in solution, but not if you are using other metals.

It is normal for the electrode to turn black, this is a fine coating of silver oxide that did not dissolve in the water.

Which reducing agent did you use?

Cinnamon.
Can you use Meltadextrin as well?

But my CS turned orange after 1/2 hour after that what tells me that I used too much NaOH
Thanks

I havent tried using them together, but I doubt it would hurt anything.

The way to determine the minimum amount of hydroxide to use is to measure the voltage across your electrodes while adding it drop by drop with stirring.  When the voltage across the electrodes decreases a few volts, you have enough.  That indicates that the regulator is within its control zone.

You can also hook up a milliammeter in series with one of the electrodes, and add hydroxide until the current reaches your regulator set point.

More likely, you didn't use enough cinnamon.

or maybe both...?
Kephra, what is the effect of heat when using NaOH, especially during reducing silver?

Thanks...
